The first working groups operating within IDEAS NCBR sp. z o.o. were launched, a research and development center operating in the field of artificial intelligence, and digital economy, which was established by the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR). Research led by prof. UW Piotr Sankowski and prof. Stefan Dziembowski, will focus on intelligent algorithms and data structures as well as digital currencies and smart contracts. The scientific advisory board which is made up of an international group of experts from universities such as MIT, University of Oxford, University of Columbia or Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute has also been established.
„The aim of the IDEAS NCBR company is to increase the research, development and innovation potential in the field of artificial intelligence and digital economy. IDEAS NCBR will take care to raise the level of competences of the scientific staff and increase the number of research and development works, primarily on the subject of artificial intelligence. An important area of the company’s activity will also be the development of cooperation between scientists and business and commercialization of the results of implemented projects by co-creating spin-off companies. They will be able to count on further support from the NCBR with the use of many tools included in the Centre’s portfolio of activities ”- says PhD Eng. Wojciech Kamieniecki, Director of the National Center for Research and Development.
IDEAS NCBR will enable work on innovations in the field of AI on a scale that was often unavailable for business. The institution will be a catalyst for research processes in Poland, they will be faster, carried out with greater momentum, by the most renowned experts. The result will be innovations based on AI algorithms implemented in various sectors and building well-educated academic staff.
„We want the research work to be concerned with technologies of the future, those that will come into force in a few years, but on the other hand, address real needs that respond to social challenges and various sectors of the economy. We will undertake ambitious challenges, solutions of which often cannot be undertaken by enterprises, because the works are subject to risk. In assessing the potential of research projects, we will be supported by the scientific advisory board, which consists of outstanding experts.” – explains Prof. UW Piotr Sankowski, President of the Management Board of IDEAS NCBR.
The scientific advisory board includes such experts as: prof. Ran Canetti from Boston University, Zofia Dzik – president of the Humanities Institute, prof. Marta Kwiatkowska from the University of Oxford, prof. Aleksander Madry from MIT, prof. Tim Roughgarden from Columbia University, Marek Barwiński from GSK.AI and Dr. Wojciech Samek from the Heinrich Hertz Institute. Its task is to assess the innovativeness of projects, the research process and the importance they may have for solving a given problem.
“What distinguishes IDEAS NCBR is the approach to the conducted researches and its selection. The algorithms that we will create have a high probability of implementation, and thus commercialization of the project. This is a benefit for both business and scientists involved in a given project, who will benefit from the results of research in the form of copyrights or created spin-off companies, ”adds Piotr Sankowski.
One of the priorities of IDEAS NCBR is to educate scientists and form staff that will educate in the field of artificial intelligence. For this reason, the center will establish cooperation with other similar research centers in the world as well as in the country.
“We plan to establish cooperation with universities in Poland and organizations that are AI-focused in order to create an environment that will be conducive to cooperation and information exchange. We want to support young scientists in building their research careers, but also show them what cooperation with the business community can look like. We will focus on cooperation with doctoral schools and give a chance to cooperate with recognized experts in the specific fields ”– adds Sankowski.
In the first place, the working groups that will be worked on intelligent algorithms and data structures as well as digital currencies and smart contracts were created. The research leaders are prof. Piotr Sankowski associated with the Institute of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University Warszawski and prof. Stefan Dziembowski, who also lectures at this faculty.
“Selected research topics are directly related to my and Piotr Sankowski’s current scientific achievements. My research interests encompass cryptography, in particular issues related to the prevention of physical attacks on cryptographic devices, and blockchain technology. These are promising areas that will gain in importance over time, ”explains Prof. Stefan Dziembowski, Research Group Leader at IDEAS NCBR.
About IDEAS NCBR
IDEAS NCBR Sp. z o.o. is a research and development center operating in the field of artificial intelligence and digital economy, whose mission is to support development of those technologies in Poland through creating a platform connecting academic environment with business. IDEAS NCBR Sp. z o.o. was established by the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR) and belongs to the NCBR Group. Our goal is to build friendly, the largest space in Poland for conducting innovative researches, as well as educating a new generation of scientists, focused on the practical application of the developed algorithms and their subsequent commercialization in the industry, finance, medicine and other branches of the economy. The highest substantive level of the implemented projects guarantees the possibility of cooperation with scientists of world renown.
About NCBR
The National Center for Research and Development (NCBR) has been a government agency for over a decade connecting the world of science and business. It creates appropriate conditions for conducting research and development works. By co-financing R&D processes, it supports domestic entrepreneurs, significantly reducing their business risk accompanying the implementation of breakthrough research projects. The mission of the NCBR is to implement tasks serving the social and economic development of Poland and to solve specific civilization problems of its inhabitants. NCBR acts as an Intermediary Institution in the operational programs: Intelligent Development and Knowledge Education Development. It implements a number of national and international programs, as well as projects related to state security and defense. With an annual budget for R&D of EUR 1 billion, NCBR is currently the largest center for supporting the development of science and economy in the country and in the region.
